Final

Before I even taken this class I knew that it was something that I wanted to take because I wanted to learn about marketing. I ended up getting a lot out of this class when it comes to marketing. The lectures that you have taught in class were very useful. The only thing that I didn’t like to much about it was that they went so fast, but that is only because we had to squeeze as much information as we could in 9 weeks. You kept me interested with you experiences from your customer service experiences and your knowledge on how a lot of companies run their businesses.

The projects were huge but I feel like I got my money’s worth. Especially with the final projects are concerned. The tests that we have taken were the worst for me in the class. Because even though I did use the book I done extremely poor on the exams because tests kind of make me nervous where I feel like I don’t remember the answer and when its open book I freak out because I can’t find the page. The videos that we have watch in class were really useful. I learned a lot from the Madmen episode when the guy was trying to prove that cigarettes don’t kill. At the same time it was an interesting show to watch. The book that we used is a really good book to keep. I don’t plan on selling it back because its made simple for us art students. What I like best about it is that the book covers only 15 pages per chapter which I think is great. There is so much useful knowledge crammed in just 19 chapters.

The grade that I deserve is somewhere between a B to a C. The reason for that is because I know that I bombed on each and every test. And since they are worth so much of my grade I know that is probably the grad I know I know that I have. My grade always bounces back from a b+ to a c+. So anywhere in between will be a grade that I deserve.

“Normally, we think of money as the medium of exchange. We “give up” money to “get” the good and services we want. Exchange does not require money however two people may barter or trade such items as baseball cards or oil paintings.” -Mktg, Lamb page4. This is a very good quote for me because before I taken this class I always thought that money was the key to all exchanges when it came to any type of exchange. I’m glad that I learned this because when I start my own company I will use this to secret to make trades with other companies without money ever being involved.
“To discover a marketing opportunity, management must know how to identify the alternatives.” -Mktg, Lamb page 22. What I learned from this quote is that it is best to always have a backup plan not just for marketing but for also advertising also. You can spread the word about your product by looking at all of the way you can get your product advertising, selling or whatever type of item you have to put out there for the world to see.
“The Recent explosion in the popularity of blogs has presented several intriguing opportunities for marketers” -Mktg, Lamb page 41. Along with you opinion Mr. Pinto, I do agree that blogs really make a website a whole lot better than without having a blog section. Even though this site doesn’t sell or make profit in anyway I think that Youtube is a great website. The fact that you can start a conversation and branch it out in so many ways is something that I want to have on my website when I promote my product.
“The first step in creating a marketing mix is developing a thorough understanding of the global target market” -Mktg, Lamb page 57. I believe this is an important quote from the book because it if the book gives you advice I think that you should take it into effect.
“Once Marketers indentify subcultures, they can design special marketing to serve their needs. Some companies launch simultaneous campaigns to reach different subcultures. -Mktg, Lamb page 71. This is an awesome quote for me because this is a great way to spread your word to other cultures that don’t know any English. McDonalds is the perfect example because they can advertise their commercials on the Spanish channels. I’ve seen it before where they have the same footage but it just been replaced with Spanish speaking announcers.
“Many Internet retailers are designing their sites to attract male shoppers.” -Mktg, Lamb page 75. I think this a good strategy for people who run their business through the net. I think the best retailers who do the best job to pull in male customers. There are all types of things that are only offered online such as certain video games, shoes, and porn of all trades. As a male customer I can say that I have actually purchased one of the three. I believe that certain products are sold only online purposely just so that males can buy more things because women buy mostly everything.
“Mail Surveys have several benefits: relatively low cost, elimination of interviewers and field supervisors, centralized control and actual or promised anonymity for respondents.” -Mktg, Lamb page 118. Although mail Surveys are good for feedback whether its positive or negative is a good idea. I think it is a good idea because they tell the company how they are doing and what they can do better such as the 3 week surveys that we have to do at school every quarter. It helps what these instructors are doing wrong and wheat they can do to make the classroom a better place to learn.
“Sometimes, Marketers can get carried away with product extensions (does the world really need 31 varieties of Head and Shoulders shampoo?) .” -Mktg, Lamb page 135. I’m actually half and half on this one in particular. I never heard of 32 different varieties of head and shoulder but I do use the product and if they made a better scent then I would purchase it. But there are companies out there that make way too much varieties a product that people don’t even want or necessarily need.
“New product ideas come from many sources, including customers, employees, distributors, competitors, vendors, research and development and consultants). ” -Mktg, Lamb page 147. Although this quote is quite obvious it’s a good one because where else does a company come up with their brilliant ideas. This quote proves that they don’t depend or invest on their ideas from just one person.
“In order to price a service, it is important to define the unit of service consumption. For example, should pricing be based on completing a specific service task (cutting a customer’s hair) or should it be time based (how long it takes to cut a customer’s hair)? .” -Mktg, Lamb page 165. This quote even had me thinking for a long time how should stuff be done. Well with me as a Web Designer, when I start building pages for clients I think that it would be best on how long it taken me to build the site. So I would do it hourly VS just having the site done and putting a price on it. Actually that can be done too because if you have really good designs then you can bump up the price because you have really good visuals. But I would just go with the hourly wage and just charge more for the good visuals .
“As more companies move toward mass customization and away from mass marketing of goods, the need to stay on top of consumer demand is forcing manufacturers to make their supply chains more flexible.” -Mktg, Lamb page 185. Flexibility is critical to a manufacturer’s success when dramatic swings in demand occur. To meet consumers’ demand for customized products, companies are forced to adapt their manufacturing approach or even create a completely new process.
“Wal-Mart is the largest full-line discount store in terms of sales. Today, it has over 7,200 stores on four continents and its pioneering retail starategy of “everyday low pricing” is now widely copied by retailers around the world.” -Mktg, Lamb page 197. I think that once Wal Mart came up with that slogan it was guaranteed that they would always have low prices. And they are very successful at that because other companies try to take their low pricing slogan but their prices aren’t ever as low as Wal Mart. This is the reason whey they are the number one company in the world.
“Almost all companies selling a good or service use advertising whether in the form of a multimillion-dollar campaign or as simple classified ad in a news paper” -Mktg, Lamb page 212 This is the most awkward quote of the book. The reason I say this is because there is another quote from the book that I want to combine with this one that says “A typical Consumer is exposed to more than 2,500 advertising messages a day but notices only between 11 and 20.” –Mktg, Lamb page 77. If a student only notice 11 through 20 messages out of 2,500 multimillions of dollars I think there is something seriously wrong with that. I think instead of playing the same stuff over and over on the same channel I think it would be best if they put there ad’s on every commercial if they can whether it’s a men’s or women’s channel because it will be a commercial that will be stuck on their mind and have it be that 20/2,500 commercial ads that they see.
“For every hour of television programming, an average of 15 minutes is dedicated to non program material.” -Mktg, Lamb page 235. I noticed this when I was young that about a quarter of the television show that you are watching is going to be about commercials. Fast food does a great job at this because if you want to your viewers to eat your product while watching television they feel like they accomplished their mission as the advertiser.
“More and more often, companies are also using blogs-both corporate and non corporate-as a tool to manage their public images. -Mktg, Lamb page 242. Like I said before this is a great way to put yourself out there. I think another great site that uses blogging is MTV.com because like youtube they have videos where you can start blogging right away at the bottom of the page and start something really interesting to talk about.

EOC WEEK 10

A place that has kept me coming back to for more is any and all Barnes and Nobles. I absolutely love that place. I am attracted to it because of the atmosphere that it gives me. It reminds me a lot like Starbucks with the European experience. Every time I go to Barnes and Nobles im always greeted and its really easy to find which area of books that I want to find. Its calms me down when I need to get away from school cause at times it can be so noisy. Barnes and Nobles reminds me of a library that I can go to and just get away. I also enjoy the different types of sections of books that most colleges, including mine don’t have. Although I don’t purchase any books I like going with friends because we all read and it makes us relax where we can do our homework because they have free WiFi. I believe that is the same reason why most people go for the same reasons that I do because it is so relaxing.

EOC Week 9 Blog

Well there are lots of times when I pay too much for things. Just the other week I went to smith’s to go grocery shopping. Since I don’t have a car my roommate takes me to Food 4 less because that is where I usually shop. They have the best prices when it comes to MOST of their food. Not counting their fruits, vegetables and meats. The reason why we had to go to Smiths was because someone else asked my roommate for a ride to the store and it was my only opportunity to go grocery shopping when I had almost nothing in my fridge. I was pretty much starving so I really didn’t have much of a choice so I just went with the flow
I purchased the same amount of food that I usually get when I go to Food 4 Less. The price usually comes to about 50 to 60 dollars. The price at Smith’s came up to about 85 dollars with the club card. Without the club card the price would have been 90 – 100 dollars. I can understand their strategy when it comes their way of bringing in customers by having the club card makes people think that they are saving money when they really aren’t saving too much. It gets even worse if the customer forgets their club card.

EOC Week 8 Progress on Vodka

My progress is going kind of slow. I deciding if I want to stick with my healthy vodka or switch to something else. Since it is getting closer and closer to the due date I have a tough choice to make. What I have so far is just a basic design of my product. I will be making a twitter account for my alcohol brand. I don’t even have a twitter account but I will start one up. I will also create me a myspace for my alcohol product. Im going to add as many alcoholic drinkers as possible. I also plan to make a youtube video. Im going to make a commercial that advertises my brand and I will give them the myspace url to get to the myspace page of my alcohol. I still don’t have a name for my alcohol yet but I feel it will be catchy for the type of alcohol that it is, since it will be a healthy type of alcohol. I have a lot of research that I still need to pick up on. But from here on out I plan on putting all of my effort into this project.

EOC #7 Most challenging part of my assignment

The most challenging part about this assignment will be getting viewers to watch my youtube video. I want it to be a video that will have humor in it and will have the viewer want to show their friends and family my product and what a funny commercial that it is. I’ve seen a few commercials that have had me die laughing such as the stride commercial about how “ridiculously lasting their gum is” so they get a ram to headbutt a man in his stomach just so he can spit out his gum. Advertising to me is very important part of making your customer interested into buying what ever it is that you are trying to sell to the world. I’m thinking maybe perhaps a great way to advertise something is to put a web site along with my commercial if it is good enough because I would get viewers. I believe one of the best commercials that has done that would be jack in the box when Jack gets hit by a bus. The website displays at the end. When you visit the website you can post your thoughts and feelings from youtube or wherever. Which to me is really funny.

Vodka pitch for marketing plan

Most alcohol products are bad for you. Our vodka is specially designed alcohol to be actually healthy for you. It has special ingredients for you that come from plants that boost your immune system which will be great for older senior citizens who given up alcohol because of a bad liver. It will be marketed not just to older people but to everyone 21 and up. It will be the first vodka to be sold at Fresh and Easy and Whole Foods. This specially designed vodka will be advertised on television including all the facts on how it will be good for you. We will make a contract with music video producers to display our product so that the recording artist will be enjoying himself in their music video while drinking our brand of vodka. Most vodka’s are 80 proof with 40 percent alcohol.

Week 6 EOC Group Project

DJMC Productions

Chistopher Robinson, Melvin Alvaradl, Dontre Waggoner and Jessi Harker.

We began by brainstorming different ideas and products that we already like. At first, we thought of improving video games, shoes, skateboards, music, or movies. Our first idea was the all purpose retractable sneaker. The sole would slide off and on with different inserts making it capable of going from casual to the club, but after close evaluation we determined that if people were to buy this shoe why wouldn’t they just change shoes before they went out? Our brainstorming went through a dry spell ending up aiming towards fashionable designer sunglass’ with quality lenses when Christopher came up with the micro chip credit card. Our first plan was to embed a chip in people’s wrist to prevent identity and credit card theft; however that didn’t sound to appealing. That’s when we came up with the Finger Scanner.

The Alpha Omega 9000 Finger Scanner will be sold to Banks, credit card companies, Corporations and hospitals to further prevent identity and/or credit cars theft. It’s a little machine that scans your finger print. No more signatures and key codes The Alpha Omega 9000 scans your finger print to ensure you are the only one accessing your valuable personal information.

A Fast, Safe, Secure way to protect your identity!

One of the classmates I chose was Wakonda Carter. http://kmiliniumproduction.blogspot.com In her EOC from last week, she spoke very highly about marketing. In one of her quotes she says “Marketing focuses on the different type of people and what consumers would buy.” I agree with what she says but she doesn’t really speak on advertising too much. When she says “The Advertiser does not deal with consumers directly. The advertisers deal the product itself” I have to disagree because they deal with more than the product they deal with the designers and the customers response on how they react on the product too.
The next student I chose was Christopher Robinson. http://robotzonmarz.blogspot.com/ I agree 100% with his blog. It makes sense in every way. About marketing he says “That is a plan that brings buyers and seller together to figuring out the needs and wants, and making products that correlate with consumer desires.” And like myself last week he pretty much said the same thing about advertising when he says “advertising is marketing to bring merchants and consumers together and Advertising is to get the people to buy the product.”
The last student I chose to critique was Shantay Reaze. http://fashionistafyi.blogspot.com/ I agree with some of what she is saying but not all of it. When she says “Marketing uses communication, distribution, and pricing strategies.” I have to disagree because communication sounds like advertising. That is a way of getting yourself out there when you communitcate through media or however you try to put yourself out there. I think she has the idea about advertising. Because she says “The main focus in advertising is to communicate the band or the name of the product/service to the public.”

Week 4 EOC marketing vs advertising

Although Marketing and Advertising has a lot in common the best way to separate the two from each other is thinking of advertising is a way to attract customers to buying your product. It’s one of many steps of marketing. Marketing on the other hand is planning or the steps it takes to bring together the buyer and the seller for the mutually advantageous exchange or transfer of products. But to take it even farther marketing also focuses on delivering value and benefits to customers. The quote “Marketing can occur even if an exchange does not occur” (Mktg Lamp page 4) is a good quote because you can do marketing everyday for example a favor that you owe someone if they ended up doing something for you to owe them back. Or even when were to post a Rolex watch on EBay and no one buys it, it’s still considered to be marketing cause it was put out there for people to see and it is free. Advertising on the other hand is different. A person or company buys the message and persuades the audience to buy their product from the radio, television, billboard or magazine and then gives credit to the sponsor or company. The best benefit of advertising is that you can communicate your product to a large amount of people all at once if you were to advertise your product on television. The down fall to advertising is that it costs a lot to advertise. But in about an hour of television a quarter of the hour goes to commercials to advertise their product, store or item.

week 1 customer service

Im usually not the person to get involved in customer reports but there is one product out there that has been getting on my last nerve. It is a Belkin Wireless Router. Its suppose to give me great internet connection wirelessly, but the truth is that it is a horrible product. I can’t take it back to Wal-Mart because that is where I got it from. But that’s the way a lot of electronics work from Wal-Mart. But my problem isnt with them. My internet will be working fine on minute and a complete disaster the next, stopping me from doing homework and checking my emails.
I call the 1800 number that is on the back of the box and I assume that the phone call is across seas because the person that talks on the phone dosent speak perfect english. I can hear the accent and it kind of throws me off and makes me confused with what they say because they have to repeat themselves about 2-3 times. But the worst thing I hate about talking to them is they talk to me like they are robots. I hate all companies that talk to their customers in a third language sort to speak. Its like that with sprint also with their over the phone customer service. But back to the belkin customer service, evertime I tell them the incident its always some new reason why it might not be working. Out of all the problems that I had with them, I say I have to call about 10 times and each time they had a completely different answer from the last person about why the internet wasn’t working. So my router still dosent work. But I am sure that I will never buy another belkin product again.

Week 2 me as a consumer

I’m a 24 year old, bi-racial male. I am half black and half Mexican. I fall more toward the African American demographic as far my life is concerned and as the way I get ready for my day. The way I get ready for my day is just showering, brushing my teeth and doing my hair just like most males in america. But I breaks off differently just a little because I use hair grease instead of hair gel. The type of people I hang around are mainly African Americans and Mexican Americans. So the way I dress is more urban like than anything else. I purchase only baggy clothes, T shirts and sneakers. The music I listen falls into every category that is out there. When I do buy CD’s I usually get the latest rap or R&B cd and sometimes alternative and as for the rest I sometimes download for websites. I buy my food in small portions that will last me for about 2 weeks. The reason for that is because I don’t want my food to go bad. I purchase fast food about 2 to 3 times a week. Most of my money goes to my bills. I don’t have that many bill that I have to pay but, they are pretty costly. Especially my phone bill, which takes up most bi-weekly pay checks.

Week 3: How I buy stuff

The way I buy stuff really depends on my wants and needs. Sure there are a lot of things that I want to buy when I go to Wal-Mart. But the fact is that I really don’t have that much money to spend. So I have to start out with the most important things that I need first. Starting out with hygene supplies. I cant go anywhere looking, feeling and smelling like crap. After I get all my important things out of the way I usually go straight to the electronic department where I can see if I can afford a video game or a dvd. Since I work at school I don’t make really that much money…yet!
When it comes to pricing of things that I want to buy, lets say a brand new TV, I usually check prices of all stores in all areas. I start out with Wal-Mart before I check with any other store. Then goes down to Best-Buy then target and so forth and so on. If I just so happen to find a better price on Ebay or Amazon then just like anyone I would pay for it because it is the best bargain I can get.
When it comes to clothes that I wear. I go to the mall with friends and I usually get an opinon of a pair of shoes im interested in. and I usually buy if they are the right color and a cool looking design. To me its always better to take a friend with you beause the retailer will always say you look good in everything that you try on so you can buy everything. If that was the case I would be owning a lot of clothes that I wouldn’t be interest in .
